Bukit Sunrise

The jeep lurches up the unpaved road at 6:30 in the morning. 50 people are crammed into a hillside parking lot meant for 30. A woman shouts at her husband to get out of the frame. The spiderweb catches the light and, for a moment, it’s the most beautiful thing here. Tour guides who all know each other make jokes while tourists clutch phones and cameras like sacred objects. This is Sunrise Hill, though some of the older folks in Sungai Lembing may still call it Bukit Kambing. The sunrise lasts about thirty minutes. On a good day, the mist parts and the sea of clouds rolls out like something from a Chinese painting. On a bad day, it’s just an orange blur behind fog and the sun plays hide and seek like a reluctant celebrity. You can also see Bukit Panorama on the right. On the left, the guides will joke about “Mount Fuji, Sungai Lembing”. No ticket is needed. No hiking either if you take the 4x4. The road used to be bumpy and required skill and a proper vehicle. In December 2025, they paved the whole thing, so now even a CR-V can make it up. If you walk here on your own, know there are dogs, unlit paths, and a sign that says 4x4 only. It’s safer and better to pay, just for the dad jokes alone. A package costs between RM35 and RM80, depending on how many stops you want. Just ask around town, and you'll either be taken there or pointed in the right direction. They pick you up at 5.30 am, feed you breakfast at the market, then take you up the hill. The jeep ride up is the best part: bumpy jungle tracks, cool pre-dawn air, the threat of motion sickness and the promise of beauty. The guides know their business. They’ll get you there on time, or they’ll refund your money, probably not though, but you still get to stand on a hill at 165 metres above sea level, watching a carpet of clouds while some man with a tripod elbows you out of his shot. The aunties are everywhere. They queue for photos with military precision. The place is crowded. The place is clean. And the locals keep it clean, because tourism is the only game in town. A toilet at the parking area exists in case of emergencies. Come early or don’t come at all. The afternoon sun turns this place into an oven with zero parking and zero sympathy. If it rained the night before, the sea of clouds appears. If it didn’t, you stare at a clear sky and wonder where your new wallpaper went. December means rain clouds that swallow your sunrise whole. February might work better, but the weather also doesn’t care about your plans.

We came here as part of the tour to the rainbow waterfall. The tour operator picks you up at 530 and drives you to the market to have breakfast at the main market before coming here for the first stop. The actual ride starts from about 630 am or so. This part of the journey is on paved roads and is about 20 minutes out from Sungai Lembing. At the observation spot there is an open paved area for the tour operators to park. We spent about 30 minutes here before going on to the waterfall.
